Our Mission:

The Lethbridge Doula Association is a non-profit group of diverse birth and postpartum professionals that provides community outreach and education to the public about the role of doulas during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum.

In addition, the LDA provides support for its membership through mentorship, continuing education and referrals.

Training and Standards:

All Lethbridge Doula Association members have completed an approved training course and may be certified with a recognized program. All members, regardless of certification status, are required to pursue ongoing continuing education.  The LDA is not a doula certifying organization and is not associated with any particular doula certifying organization, nor does it promote any particular path to becoming a doula over another.

The Lethbridge Doula Association has a strict internet policy, a standardized code of ethics and standard of practice guidelines that are followed by all members.

What is a Doula?

The word doula comes from the ancient Greek meaning a woman who serves and is now used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother and/or partner before, during and just after birth; or who provides emotional and practical support for the new family during the postpartum period.  While the same doula may provide both birth care and postpartum care, it is necessary to differentiate between the two types of doulas:

Birth Doula – A person professionally trained to provide support to the woman and partner during labor and childbirth.

Postpartum Doula – A supportive advisor and helper, professionally trained to provide postpartum support to the mother and her family.

April is...

Cesarean Awareness Month

This is a great time to shed light on the rapidly rising cesarean rate and the effects the surgery has on mothers, babies and their families.  The risks of surgery are not felt only by the women who have cesareans, but by our society as a whole. We owe those women the access to knowledge and the availability of information and support.  Please visit ICAN for more information!

May is...

International Doula Month

Nicole Kidman did it, so did Kelly Ripa, Demi Moore, Cindy Crawford and Ricki Lake. Doulas aren't just for the "rich and famous," moms all over Southern Alberta are following their lead, getting a head start on the stork's arrival and finding out about doula support. The Lethbridge Doula Association thought this would be the perfect time to highlight this growing profession. Please check our meetings and events page for upcomong details.
