The LDA is not a doula certifying organization and is not associated with any particular doula certifying organization, nor does it promote any particular path to becoming a doula over another.

What is a Doula?
The word doula comes from the ancient Greek meaning a woman who serves and is now used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother and/or partner before, during and just after birth; or who provides emotional and practical support for the new family during the postpartum period. While the same doula may provide both birth care and postpartum care, it is necessary to differentiate between the two types of doulas:
Birth Doula – A person professionally trained to provide support to the woman and partner during labor and childbirth.
Postpartum Doula – A supportive advisor and helper, professionally trained to provide postpartum support to the mother and her family.
